I have been away for a while but I came in today to share this with you. In April, we received 7812 eggs of an import from United Kingdom. These eggs were laid by fowls raised in quarantine, then they laid the eggs for the imprt. All along the way, they have been rigorously tested for any communicable diseases, always testing negative.

Hatching those eggs at Torres Strait Isaland quarantine station, one chick of 4000, including the weaker sentinels bred especially to be most susceptible to disease, only the one showed positive symptoms in one test. The test wasn't verified by follow up. All other tests prior and after have been negative. Last Friday, AQUIS (quarantine authority) gave the order to destroy the whole flock as the chick was being raised in a single flock. On Monday, ARPIS, the import syndicate successfully argued for a stay of execution until they were able to make argument in Supreme Court. That is happening right now as I type. If not successfully argued, the 4000 will be destroyed tomorrow, Friday 19th. The 4000 birds are rarebreeds for example, Sicilian Buttercups, Vorwerks, Orpingtons, Wyandottes all from UK stock. No imports have been brought to Australia officially since 1960's.The syndicate spent around $500,000 Australian Dollars so far. Right now everyone involved in poultry in Australia is praying that good argument wins and the fowl survive to be handed to their respective syndicate owners. Pray.
